Product Overview

For enhanced iron absorption without gastrointestinal side effects

  • A non-constipating, well-absorbed form of iron
  • An essential mineral for the formation of red blood cells
  • Helps fight fatigue due to iron insufficiency
  • An iron deficiency can cause many symptoms, including weakness, ringing in the ears, spots before the eyes, and shortness of breath on exertion

Most of the body's iron is found in hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in red blood cells. Smaller amounts of iron are found in the tissues as myoglobin and as cofactors for many enzymes. Because of its central role in the hemoglobin molecule, iron is essential for the formation of red blood cells.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has calculated the prevalence of iron deficiency and iron-deficient anemia in the United States from data collected from physical exams and household interviews and determined the prevalence of iron deficiency is greatest among toddlers, ages 1-2 years (7%), and menstruating adolescent and adult females, ages 12-49 (9-16%).

An iron deficiency can manifest as weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath on exertion, dizziness, tinnitus, spots before the eyes, drowsiness, irritability, infrequent menstruation, and loss of libido.

Conventional iron supplementation, including forms such as ferrous sulfate, can cause gastrointestinal side effects – including nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and dark-colored stools – because these conventional forms of iron are poorly absorbed.

Thorne Research's Iron Bisglycinate provides 25 mg of elemental iron per capsule reacted with glycine for optimal absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, thus preventing the typical gastrointestinal side effects.

I have a great deal of trouble with iron- can't absorb it. This brand was recommended by my integrative doctor. she also recommended taking it late at night when the stomach is somewhat empty, and taking vitamin c with it to help absorb it. Blood work shows it works better than all the other brands I have tried over the years.

Treatment for anaemia with no side effects

Posted by 5608640232288271281 on Apr 11, 2017 | Verified Purchase

The first time I too iron supplements to treat anaemia a few years ago I was in bed for a couple of days (over Christmas) with very bad stomach pain. I developed anaemia again last southern winter, and searched online for a tummy friendly alternative, and ferrous bisglycinate came up a a good alternative to ferrous sulphate. I have found it to have no side effects such as tummy pain or constipation, and the Thorne product bought online is cheaper than at our local health food store. Delivery (to Australia) was very quick. Highly recommended.
