The information in the book is very basic. You can find much more about supplement facts and latest news online. The author takes a very narrow mindset on the supplements. In short, they treat supplements like drugs and expect supplements to kill. Considering the author is not even a ND but MD, I will strongly recommend to keep away. Books, American Diabetes Association Guide to Herbs & Nutritional Supplements - Diabetic? Here is a Good Guide To Relevant Herbs and Supplements (With a Quick Cheat Sheet on Page ?? )

Posted by Thoughtful-Reviews on Feb 08, 2014 | Verified Purchase

This piqued my interests bec. my Mom has developed diabetes. I wanted a handbook that I could peruse when I need some "101" about a certain herb or supplement. In this case, the book did not disappoint. It organized each herb/supplement into: (1) short backgrounder, (2) claimed uses(3)doses, (4) studies, (5) side effects, and drug interactions. An in the summary sheet (p.167-ff), (6) Warnings. The "studies" refer to clinical trial or reviews that buttress, or belie, the claims. However, the author cited NO references or made NO annotations about the who-what-when-where of the cited works. A more scholarly approach would have been excellent. Anyway, here are other takeaways: (1)precautionary statement, 'treat herbs and supplements with the same respect as prescription drugs', mainly bec. of their side effects, and drug interactions. They can be fatal, e.g use of aloe during surgeries;(2)the specific URLs in www.nih.gov (National Health Institute) when you want to research your supplements, p.8; (3) List of independent testing organizations which provide their &seal of approval on the accuracy of a product's label and contents p.11. These organizations came about because FDA does not regulate dietary supplements and there is a need for consumers to be protected from unscrupulous manufacturers. And lastly, the one I liked best, a very great resource, (4) Nutritional Supplement and Herb Summary, a quick guide given the name of the supplement, the claimed usage, doses/forms, study results, drug interactions, and warnings Feast on this on pages 167-ff. >>> To get more /Nuggets and Tips/ on products me and my family have actually bought and used... ...
