good nibs

These cacao nibs served me well, seemingly give a boost to smoothies and a little crunch as well.

Thanks for your feedback!

Good quality

I use this to make raw coconut chocolate no bake refrigerator cookies. Just grind the nibs up in a coffee grinder first!

This arrived fresher than store bought. Love it, the smell of cacao is so good, they are crispy and add to sweet dishes.

Cadmium content too high according to lab tests of 'As You Sow' - very poor customer care experience

Posted by iHerb Customer on Jun 06, 2017 | Verified Purchase

In 2015/2016 As You Sow published several of their lab tests results. They pointed out that the Cadmium content of among others these Earth Cicle Organics cacao nibs according to their test results were above the safe harbor threshold of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65). They also state to have filed notices with among others Earth Cicle Organics - so the company must have been aware. Be aware that a diet too high in cadmium among others is linked to neurotoxity in a multitude of scientific studies (and many more health concerns). When I commented about this on the Facebook page of Earth Cicle Organics, their response was that almost everything comes with 'a small risk' and that cacao simply contains cadmium. Which of course is the case, however: different cacao products contain different levels of cadmium - and certainly not every cacao product contains a level of cadmium above the safe harbor threshold of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. After all: the soil of different regions where cacao is produced has different cadmium content too. Either way, instead of considering the health concerns their customers may have and trying to improve the quality of their product, I felt Earth Cicle Organics was merely defensive in their response. But worse: they had flagged my review on Facebook apparently, ensuring Facebook removed it. Obviously I had not used any foul language. It felt to me they did not want their customers to know what I am stating here. For a comparison: in 2014 ConsumerLabs published lab test results that indicated that a specific type of cacao powder from Navitas Naturals had a high cadmium content. The CEO of Navitas Naturals responded stating that two different labs regularly conducted lab tests on their products, but that after this report they had decided to have a 3rd independent lab perform new tests, and even that they were searching for new regions to have their cacao produced with soil that contained less heavy metals. To me, such an approach shows Navitas Naturals was concerned about the health concerns their customers may have had and that they truly wanted to sell what they advertised - a product with specific health related properties with as little properties that may damage your health as possible. With regard to Earth Cicle Organics: after the experience described above, my concerns are not just limited to the quality of this product anymore, but also involve their approach in general when it comes to the quality of their products and the health concerns their customers may have.
