Many Americans love bold fake flavored stuff. For them, this might be a treat. But if you want your buttermilk pancakes to taste like buttermilk pancakes that are healthy and not from a big flashy chain restaurant or even straight out of a mall cupcake shop, you will be disappointed by the unnecessary sort of upscaleish over the top birthday cake flavor of these. I once ate Birthday Cake Oreos and this seems like a classier and slightly less intense but that similar kind of flavoring.
KAF is a great brand, quality, integrity and that little bit extra. I always got their flour in the US. But with these, they are not going for homestyle goodness. These pancakes are for people who love rainbow color food, or major chain restaurant desserts with tons of chemicals and sprinkles. That said, some people will be thrilled to have this obnoxious flavor at home rather than the yucky real homemade taste kids hate. This is up to you. Kids who love fake flavored processed food might be happy you finally make something good.
I think there was a birthday cake or color sprinkle version of this pancake mix for awhile and this definitely tastes like what you would expect from that. The actual buttermilk flavor is rather faint.
Additionally, I didn’t get around to making these for some months but not expired and maybe the mix got compacted because they didn’t cook through and even when browned and cooked for a sufficient time for pancakes, they were goopy and wet in the middle and hard lumps more than fluffy goodness. I’m pretty good at making hard lump pancakes from scratch so it’s a waste to pay a premium for a mix. Next time I’ll sift it or add some baking powder. I did let it sit for five minutes per the instructions.
For me personally, these are one star. Never ever buy this again. But the quality is good minus the flavoring, if the wet inside was user error. The other person eating them didn’t mind the flavoring.
